Program Summary

The program will focus on ABA Model Rule 8.4 (g). The goal will be for attorneys to: (1) learn definitions of terms used in the Rule; (2) learn best practices to avoid inadvertently violating the Rule; (3) gain knowledge about the types of statements and actions that can be viewed as discriminatory or may cause a hostile work environment; and (4) understand the interaction between Rule 8.4 and Rule 8.3, which requires lawyers to report the unethical conduct of other lawyers.

Anthony P. Ashton, Esq. is a commercial litigation partner and has practiced for more than 20 years. He is an expert in diversity, and has taught continuing legal education courses in, and written articles on, diversity. He has served throughout the United States as a speaker on issues of diversity in the legal profession. Mr. Ashton is a member of Character and Fitness Committee for the Maryland Bar. He is a past recipient of the NAACP Civil Rights Champions Award. His firm, Baxter, Baker, Sidle, Conn & Jones is full-service law firm.

His practice involves representation of individuals and corporations in lawsuits involving, contract disputes, real estate disputes, torts, class actions, consumer protection statutes, shareholders’ rights and fiduciary duties of officers and directors. He also represents and advises educational and religious institutions and their Boards. Mr. Ashton formerly was partner at DLA Piper LLP (US), where he headed the Diversity and & Inclusion Committee for its Baltimore offices.
