Jan I. Berlage is a partner with Gohn Hankey & Berlage LLP. His practice focuses on general business litigation, ranging from commercial disputes to bankruptcy to intellectual property. Mr. Berlage has extensive experience in trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative hearings, including arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third and Fourth Circuits.

He has secured major jury verdicts and large settlements for both businesses and individuals, as well as successfully defended against multi-million dollar claims in both state and federal court. Prior to private practice, Mr. Berlage served as law clerk to the Honorable E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland.

He has taught pretrial litigation practice at the University of Maryland School of Law and served on the Board of Governors for the Maryland State Bar Association and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Maryland State Action Committee. Mr. Berlage co-authored two books: Maryland Equine Law: A Legal Guide to Horse Ownership and Activities; and Judgment Avoidance: Exemptions and Lien Stripping. He is also a Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America as well as the American and Maryland State Bar Foundations, presents regularly at CLE courses, and has been the chair of numerous committees at both the national and state level.

He earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from Wesleyan University; his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as executive editor of The Journal of Law & Politics; and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Saxon M. Marvin is an associate with Gohn Hankey & Berlage LLP. She is licensed in the State of Maryland and U.S. District of Maryland. She specializes in equine law litigation. Her practice focuses more generally on general business litigation, ranging from commercial disputes to intellectual property, often representing small businesses. Ms. Marvin has experience in trials, arbitrations, and mediations, including successfully defending equine clients on appellate arguments. Prior to private practice, Ms. Marvin served as a law clerk to the Honorable Claria Horn Boom, U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky.

Ms. Marvin attended the University of Kentucky for her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Minor in German language, with honors, her Master of Arts in International Commerce and Intelligence and Security, and her Juris Doctorate degree. During law school, Ms. Marvin served as the President of the Equine Law Society, was the first paid student legal assistant at the University of Kentucky Rosenberg Legal Clinic and was admitted to practice law on a limited license by the Kentucky Bar Association in her 3L year. Through her limited practice, Ms. Marvin volunteered outside her work and school hours to provide Pro Bono legal services, both through the Legal Clinic, and by volunteering in Eastern Kentucky after tragic flooding in August 2022. She also worked for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for three years, specializing in international trade, and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture prior to that.

Ms. Marvin is presently a member of the Maryland Bar Association, and currently serves as Secretary to the Agricultural Law Section.
