Qualified Opportunity Zones: Saving Taxes and Making Profit

The tax bill of 2017 added a little know provision which allows an investor to avoid capital gains on profits which are reinvested in real property or certain other investments in a qualified opportunity zone. The zones have been established by Congress using the 2010 census.

If one keeps the funds invested for 7 years, the investor will pay tax on only 85% of the deferred gains. Furthermore, if the funds are properly invested and the investment is then sold, there will be no tax at all on the sale.

This program will provide an overview of the statute and regulations regarding Qualified Opportunity Zones.

Kenneth Sprang, Esq. is an attorney with over 40 years’ experience as in-house counsel, in private practice, government, and academia. Mr. Sprang has worked at both large and small law firms.

For the last 13 years, Kenneth has been a Managing Member of the Washington International Business Counsel. In this role, Mr. Sprang represents U.S. and foreign clients in general business, corporate, and labor relations and employment and real estate matters. His labor and employment work includes regularly advising clients regarding employee benefits and other employment matters; defending employers in employee-initiated claims; drafting employee handbooks and HR policies; labor arbitration and collective bargaining, and counseling employers in labor relations, discrimination, employment law, employee benefits, and HR matters. He also conducts frequent webinars on both business and labor and employment topics.

Mr. Sprang corporate work includes forming new companies, functioning as corporate secretary, and providing counsel in corporate governance; counseling businesses in regulatory compliance, intellectual property, immigration, merger and acquisition activities and other corporate matters; and reviewing, negotiating, and drafting various contracts. Kenneth represents corporate clients in varied litigation and administrative proceedings and serves as general counsel to several smaller.

Mr. Sprang earned his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, a Master’s degree in Speech and Theater from the University of Michigan, and his B.S. in Education: from Ohio State University. Mr. Sprang is the author or co-author of several books and articles on labor and employment law and he regularly presents webinars on both business and labor and employment themes.

Accreditation Policy
myLawCLE seeks accreditation for all programs in all states. (Accreditation for paralegals sought thru NALA and NFPA paralegal associations.) Each attending attorney/paralegal will receive a certificate of completion following the close of the CLE program as proof of attendance. In required states, myLawCLE records attorney/paralegals attendance, in all other states attorney/paralegal is provided with the approved CLE certificate to submit to their state bar or governing association.

    Live Video Broadcasts

Live video broadcasts are new live CLE programs being streamed and recorded for the first time. All of these programs qualify for “Live” CLE credit in all states except NV, OH, MS, IN, UT, PA, GA, SC, and LA —these states require in-person attendance to qualify for “Live” CLE credit.

    “Live” Re-Broadcasts

“Live” Re-broadcasts are replays of previous recorded CLE programs, set on a specific date and time and where the original presenting speakers calls in live at the end of the event to answer questions. This “live” element allows for “live” Re-broadcast CLEs to qualify for “Live” CLE credits in most states. [The following states DO NOT allow for “live” CLE credits on re-broadcast CLEs: NV, OH, MS, IN, UT, PA, GA, SC, and LA]

Many states allow for credit to be granted on a 1:1 reciprocal basis for courses approved in another mandatory CLE jurisdiction state. This is known as a reciprocity provision and includes the following states: AK, AR, HI, CT, FL, ME, MO, MT, ND, NH, NM, VT, NJ, NY, and WV. myLawCLE does not seek direct accreditation of live webinars or teleconferences in these states.
