2026-03-25 13:00:00

Retirement, succession, and exit planning present unique challenges for law firm owners, particularly when personal financial readiness is closely tied to the value and transferability of the practice itself. This program examines the five critical questions every law firm owner should consider when planning for retirement, including personal income readiness, enterprise value, succession and exit options, deal structure and tax considerations, and the transition of clients and key personnel.

Learning Objectives & Framework

Review the core learning objectives and the retirement readiness triangle (personal, firm, and financial readiness). Understand how the five critical questions build sequentially to create a comprehensive retirement decision path.

clock 1:10 pm - 1:25 pm EST

Question 1: Can I Actually Afford to Retire?

Determine your sources of retirement income and what constitutes enough. Address personal readiness by identifying what replaces your 40-hour work week and explore the psychological readiness challenges attorneys face when stepping away.

clock 1:25 pm - 1:40 pm EST

Question 2: What Is My Firm Actually Worth?

Analyze tangible versus intangible value through the lens of the four C’s: human capital, structural capital, customer capital, and social capital. Learn why owner dependence creates a transferability problem and how to calculate enterprise value.

clock 1:40 pm - 1:55 pm EST

Question 3: Who Would Buy This Firm?

Explore external buyer options (other attorneys and law firms) and internal options (partners and associates). Assess which succession path qualifies for your firm based on factors determining buyer interest and typical post-sale roles.

clock 1:55 pm - 2:20 pm EST

Question 4: How Do Deals Actually Get Structured and Executed?

Examine common deal structures including seller financing, earnouts, and installment arrangements. Explore creative tax strategies and learn asset versus equity sales considerations, plus risk management and post-sale liability protection strategies.

clock 2:20 pm - 2:35 pm EST

Question 5: What Should I Be Doing Now?

Shift your perspective to view retirement planning as an options strategy. Learn practical steps to reduce owner dependence, align personal and business finances, strengthen cash flow, and establish contingency protection for disability and death.

clock 2:35 pm - 2:40 pm EST

Conclusion, Resources & Q&A
