Program Summary

Whether it is the discovery of Bernie Madoff stealing billions or the treasurer embezzling tens of thousands from a local youth athletic league, people's response is almost inevitably, "How could that have happened" or "They seemed so nice." While there are certainly some truly evil people who engage in fraud deliberately, most fraudsters end up falling into a criminal life. Behavioral economics studies why people do the things they do and end up as financial criminals.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • The story of Tipper X - a real life white collar criminal
  • Traditional perspectives on fraud and embezzlement and the drivers of that conduct
  • Lessons learned from behavioral economics
