Program Summary

This program explores the ethical challenges facing attorneys and law firms as AI tools become increasingly common (and useful). Opening with a crash course on the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and AI adoption trends in the legal community, we will evaluate seven landmark cases involving AI-related misconduct from across the country and analyze recent guidance from the ABA, state bar associations, and courts that establishes the beginnings of a framework for ethical AI use. Rather than simply identifying risks, this program will share actionable implementation strategies that help participants develop and mature their own AI governance systems. In an environment where “the buck stops with you,” this CLE equips lawyers to use AI tools ethically and effectively.

Presented by the Federal Bar Association Professional Development Committee

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Review the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and discuss trends in legal AI use
  • Evaluate seven landmark cases involving AI-related misconduct
  • Analyze legal guidance on AI use from various authorities (ABA, state bar associations, courts)
  • Consider how strong AI governance can allow lawyers and law firms to realize the value of AI while mitigating risk, with an eye to practical implementation
