Legal Status of Companion Animals: Evolving Protections

This session explores how companion animals are defined in law and their historical treatment as personal property in tort actions. Attendees will examine the growing conflict between traditional property classifications and evolving public opinion, new legislation, and changing damage recovery options. The session also covers federal and state protections for service animals and emotional support animals under the ADA and Fair Housing Act.

Requirements

The Alabama State Bar MCLE Commission requires attorneys to complete 12 credits, including 1 ethics, by December 31 of each year. All credits must be reported by February 15 of the following year. A maximum of 12 credits, including 1 ethics credit, may be carried over for 1 year only.
