Program Summary

States are increasingly passing legislation legalizing the use of marijuana (either for medicinal purposes or for recreational use). However, marijuana remains illegal as a schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. This adversity between state and federal laws results in an environment rife with uncertainties for businesses small and large. This course explores recent state laws that have passed which address marijuana use in the workplace, federal workplace laws which apply to the cannabis industry, workplace safety in the cannabis industry, drug testing laws, the intersection of federal and state laws, and more.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • A brief overview of cannabis, marijuana, hemp and cannabinoids
  • State law developments addressing marijuana use by current and prospective employees
  • Federal workplace laws which apply to the cannabis industry
  • Best practices for employers to ensure they are complying with both federal and state laws regarding employee marijuana use
