Sal earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration — summa cum laude — before going on to receive his Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1994 and has practiced in the state ever since, developing an expertise in Michigan trust and estate law that spans more than three decades of continuous client service.

Recognition & Leadership

Sal's professional standing has been recognized through his selection as a Rising Stars honoree, as well as his recognition in that distinguished program from 2014 through 2016 — distinctions that reflect the esteem of his peers and the broader legal community. Beyond formal honors, perhaps the most meaningful testament to his reputation is his sustained role as a trusted thought leader in continuing legal education. He serves on the Estate Planning Advisory Board for Strafford, one of the nation's leading legal education providers, and on the InterActive Legal Practice Advisory Board — advisory appointments that underscore the confidence the legal education community places in his expertise and judgment.

Sal is an active and engaged member of the legal profession, with a particular commitment to elevating the practice of estate planning through education and peer engagement. He is a member of the Probate & Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan and serves as a regular continuing education presenter for two prominent national legal education webinar providers — Rossdale of Miami, Florida, and Strafford of Dallas, Texas. Through these platforms, Sal has educated attorneys across the country on sophisticated estate planning techniques, retirement plan strategies, and trust law developments. His dual service on the Strafford Estate Planning Advisory Board and the InterActive Legal Practice Advisory Board further reflects his standing as a respected voice shaping how estate planning education is delivered to the profession.

Experience

Sal has been a member of the Trusts and Estates Practice Group at Giarmarco, Mullins & Horton, P.C. since 1996, bringing nearly three decades of focused experience to his clients. His practice encompasses general estate planning for individuals and families as well as highly technical strategies designed to address complex situations and tax planning objectives. He is particularly skilled in the modification of irrevocable trusts — employing tools such as trust decanting, exercises of power of appointment, and other advanced techniques to adapt existing plans to changing circumstances and client needs. Sal also has deep expertise in pre-death and post-death planning for IRAs and other retirement plans, a rapidly evolving area of the law that demands both technical precision and proactive strategy. Rounding out his practice, he advises clients on a full range of charitable planning vehicles, including charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and private foundations — helping clients achieve philanthropic goals in a manner that is both tax-efficient and aligned with their broader legacy objectives.
