Program Summary

Since World War II, the number of veterans receiving less than honorable discharges has increased dramatically. These “bad paper” discharges often involve underlying mental health conditions such as PTSD from combat or military sexual trauma; discrimination based on race, sexual orientation or gender identity; or unjust or improper command discretion. And the ramifications are severe: the discharges often preclude veterans from state and federal benefits including VA healthcare, service connection compensation for injuries, and access to housing and employment opportunities. Veterans with bad paper suffer from higher rates of homelessness, incarceration, unemployment, and suicide. Fortunately, with proper legal assistance, veterans can obtain discharge upgrades, opening the door to life-transforming benefits.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • What is a discharge status and why it matters
  • The basics of discharge upgrade law
  • How to apply for a discharge upgrade
  • Appealing negative DOD board decisions to federal court

Date / Time: November 16, 2023
