Bridging the Gap: Overcoming Generational Bias for Stronger Legal Teams

This session explores the five generations currently active in the legal workforce: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Participants will examine each generation’s distinct values, work styles, and communication preferences shaped by their unique formative experiences.

This session defines implicit bias and explores how unconscious attitudes toward different age groups develop from lived experiences and media influences. Participants will learn why stereotypes are harmful and how rational deliberation can help override hardwired responses.

A brief intermission allowing participants to refresh and reflect on the material covered. This break provides an opportunity to network with colleagues before continuing the program.

This session examines how generational biases affect attorney-client relationships, workplace dynamics, and professional interactions. Topics include differing attitudes toward authority, DEI perspectives, mentorship approaches, and varying expectations around loyalty and work-life balance.

Participants will learn practical strategies for bridging generational divides including fostering open dialogue, creating psychological safety, and implementing reverse mentorship. The session emphasizes building community through listening and leveraging each generation’s unique strengths.
