Gerard M. Stegmaier is a partner in Reed Smith LLP’s Tech & Data Group, based in Washington, D.C. He focuses his practice on corporate governance, intellectual property, Internet issues, cryptocurrency, and digital assets, particularly as they relate to privacy, information security, and consumer protection. An experienced and pragmatic litigator, Gerry dedicates a significant part of his practice to prelitigation and advisory services concerning business strategy for privacy by design, data protection, intellectual property, and emerging technologies and markets. He often acts as outside product counsel to leading innovators and disruptive technology companies.
Gerry is designated as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He has assisted numerous automotive, health information technology, data management, advertising, and consumer technology companies with information management and protection strategies, including some of the most popular consumer products and services of recent years.
His academic credentials include a J.D., magna cum laude, from George Mason University School of Law, where he served as an editor of the George Mason Law Review. He also holds an M.A. from the Catholic University of America and a B.A. from George Mason University, where he was a member of the National Champion Debate Team.
