Program Summary

Session I - Understanding medical records in healthcare – Jean K. Cooper

Welcome to another paralegal CLE, where understanding medical records is key in healthcare. Records come from various sources, such as hospitals and clinics. Getting them involves requests through providers or legal channels. Managing medical records means organizing and securing them properly. But beyond that, they hold hidden secrets, revealing important insights into a patient's history and treatment. This understanding not only helps healthcare delivery but also legal matters, highlighting the importance of medical records.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Identify Sources of Medical Records and Medical Information
  • Explore Methods of Obtaining Medical Records
  • Understand Medical Record File Management
  • Learn Hidden Secrets that Medical Records Hold

Session II – Right or Wrong - Ethics for Paralegals - Cari Lynn Sheehan

This seminar will discuss various ethical issues facing paralegals in relation to technology which continues to evolve and grow. Lawyers and paralegals need to learn how to navigate the waters in relation to their ethical obligations. This seminar will discuss things such as confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and much more. Whether you are a new paralegal or a more seasoned paralegal, this is a seminar you will not want to miss!

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Discussion of the overarching Professional Rule of Conduct 1.1 regarding competence
  • Discussion of how the Rules of Professional Conduct intersect with social media (Rule 1.6 Confidentiality; Rule 5.5 UPL; Rule 4.2 Truthfulness; and more!)
  • Ethical Risks associated with use of AI in the legal practice and the ethical implications (Rule 1.6 Confidentiality; Rule 1.5 Fees; Rule 8.4 Prejudice; and more!)
