Program Summary

Session I - Optimizing Mass Tort Results Through AI Advancements

Mass tort litigation is a multi-phase process with each phase presenting unique challenges and requiring different tools and skills. This CLE will discuss the use of Generative AI and other artificial intelligence tools to increase efficiency and maximize success at each phase of mass tort litigation. This will include both practical do’s and don’ts and strategic concerns to consider.

  • Document preservation, collection, and production
  • Use of AI in expert discovery
  • Use of AI in legal research and writing
  • Use of AI in trial preparation

Session II – Legal Ethics: Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mass tort practice

This session will delve into the ethical rules and considerations surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in mass tort litigation.

Marchello Gray_myLawCLEMarchello Gray | Hollingsworth LLP

Marchello Gray is a partner in the firm’s Complex Litigation and Toxic Torts & Products Liability practice groups. He represents multiple chemical and drug corporations in serial mass tort litigation, federal multidistrict litigation, individual state court proceedings, and coordinated statewide litigation. Mr. Gray specializes in working with expert witnesses and company employees to develop science-based defense strategies for trials and appellate matters. Mr. Gray prides himself on the ability to present complex scientific concepts into jury friendly defense themes.

 

James M. Sullivan_myLawCLEJames M. Sullivan | Hollingsworth LLP

James M. Sullivan is co-leader of the Firm’s E-Discovery group. He has guided clients through corporate discovery in some of the most complex federal and state court litigations. He has served as ESI Liaison Counsel for the defense in federal multidistrict litigation and coordinated state court litigation. He also has consulted for corporations on a broad range of information governance and litigation preparedness issues. His E-Discovery practice is informed by his broad experience in pretrial, trial, and appellate practice. He has presented at national E-Discovery conferences, and published in legal magazines such as ALM’s Legal tech News, DRI’s In-House Defense Quarterly, and DRI’s For the Defense. He is an active member of The Sedona Conference. He has served his alma mater Georgetown University Law Center as an eDiscovery coach to attorneys, discovery vendors, and other attendees of Georgetown’s E-Discovery Training Academy. He has been recognized on a number of occasions, including in 2020, 2023, and 2024, in the DC edition of Super Lawyers for E-Discovery

 

Tamara Barago_myLawCLETamara Barago | Hollingsworth LLP

Tamara Barago specializes in the defense of complex serial and mass tort litigation—primarily personal injury litigation involving regulated products. She co-manages the firm’s corporate discovery team for a massive, multi-jurisdiction products liability litigation. Her experience includes analyzing and advising on corporate discovery strategy for thousands of cases in federal and state courts, determining responses to thousands of written discovery requests, and assisting with discovery and liability-related issues from initial requests through corporate witness depositions, expert discovery, motions practice, and trial.

 

Carter Thurman_myLawCLECarter Thurman | Hollingsworth LLP

Carter Thurman has broad experience in the defense and prosecution of complex civil litigation, including products liability, commercial, and environmental cases. He has substantial trial and oral argument experience, including recently serving as trial counsel prosecuting commercial contract claims against a co-owner and operator of a chemical plant. He also represents large pharmaceutical companies in products liability mass tort litigation. He has a wealth of experience directing and crossing witnesses, presenting opening and closing arguments, and arguing numerous motions in federal courts across the country.

 

Shannon N. Proctor_myLawCLEShannon N. Proctor | Hollingsworth LLP

Shannon N. Proctor brings her decade-plus experience in the pharmaceutical industry to her products liability practice. She defends pharmaceutical companies in high-stakes litigation in both federal and state courts nationwide. She has extensive experience developing expert witnesses addressing FDA’s regulatory framework, authoring a wide variety of pleadings, briefs, and motions, and participating in all phases of litigation. Before joining Hollingsworth, Ms. Proctor worked at a law firm in its global FDA practice advising clients on various FDA regulatory matters and clerked on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and on the United States Court of Federal Claims, Office of Special Masters. Prior to graduating from Emory University School of Law, Ms. Proctor obtained her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Jacksonville University and worked in the pharmaceutical industry.
