This presentation will discuss practical strategies for untangling anxiety, imposter syndrome, and fear in the practice of law. The presenters will start by defining imposter syndrome and how it can manifest in law students, lawyers, and other members of the legal profession. The presenters will share their own experiences in grappling with imposter syndrome, performance anxiety, and fear, along with evidence-based techniques for understanding the mental, emotional, and even physical manifestations of these challenges and how they can affect our roles as advocates. The presenters will offer tools and techniques for working through imposter syndrome successfully, as part of our ethical duty to tend to our mental, physical, and emotional well-being in the context of our professional duty of competence in lawyering. Mr. Harrison will describe the California State Bar’s Overcoming Imposter Syndrome Toolbox he spearheaded when he was Chair of the California State Bar’s Council on Access and Fairness. Professor Brown will build on the principles in the California State Bar's toolbox by describing methods to nurture our "somatic intelligence"—understanding how to manage innate physical responses to stressors, anxieties, and fears. Together, the speakers will invite attendees to give themselves regard as lawyer-athletes or lawyer-performers, successfully strengthening our cognitive, emotional, and physical dimensions to become authentically empowered advocates.
