Program Summary

Session I - Key Strategies for Managing Retirement Assets and Estate Planning – Vanessa L. Kanaga

Retirement assets like 401(k)s and IRAs play a critical role in estate planning—but why do they demand such special attention? What sets them apart from other assets such as real estate or business interests, and how does that impact planning strategies?

This session will explore the distinct nature of retirement benefits, diving into the reasons they require extra care in estate planning. We’ll discuss the potential advantages of proactive planning for these assets, along with the pitfalls of neglecting to do so. Topics will include the tax advantages tied to retirement accounts, how to navigate the rules governing these assets, and the implications of recent regulatory changes.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Tax treatment of retirement accounts
  • Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
  • Non-tax issues
  • Trusts and retirement assets

Session II - Trusts as Beneficiaries of Retirement Accounts – Sahri Zeger

Explore the use of trusts in retirement planning. It covers the process of naming a trust as a beneficiary, the impact of the SECURE Act on trust distributions, and the criteria for qualifying as a see-through trust.

The session also compares conduit and accumulation trusts, examining their differences in managing required minimum distributions and tax implications. Participants will learn how to choose between these trust types based on estate planning goals and tax considerations.

As part of the Becker & House team, Vanessa draws from her rich experience in estate planning and the problem-solving skills honed as a business leader, to offer personalized, effective solutions for her clients.
