Program Summary

This CLE is designed for attorneys who want to deepen their understanding of alcohol-related legal cases by exploring the science of alcohol's behavior in the human body. The course will cover two main components: what the body does to alcohol (i.e., pharmacokinetics) and what alcohol does to the body (i.e., pharmacodynamics).

The course will also provide an analysis of dram shop and liquor liability, a crucial topic for attorneys involved in alcohol-related legal matters. Furthermore, it will explain what information toxicologists need from attorneys to conduct thorough and effective analysis of alcohol-related cases. This knowledge will help attorneys better collaborate with experts and provide stronger representation for their clients.

By the end of this course, attorneys will have a foundational understanding of the science behind alcohol use and intoxication, be able to interpret toxicology results effectively, and understand how dram shop laws apply in civil and criminal cases.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Review of alcohol toxicology
  • What the body does to alcohol
  • What alcohol does to the body
  • Dram shop liability
  • The role of toxicologists in alcohol-related legal cases
  • Conclusion and Q&A
