Session II - Enhancing Lawyer Well-Being: Addressing stress, mental health, and substance misuse - Karen Munoz
The legal profession is not immune to the implications of stress, mental illness, and substance misuse. These issues can significantly impair judgment, leading to subpar client representation and potential violations of professional conduct rules, potentially increasing the risk of malpractice claims. Work performance is impacted, with affected lawyers often struggling to meet deadlines, manage their caseloads, and maintain productive client relationships. Increased absenteeism and presenteeism are common, further exacerbating the negative effects on the workplace.
Promoting a culture of well-being within the legal profession is essential. This involves destigmatizing mental health concerns, offering flexible work arrangements, and managing workloads effectively. This session will touch on the issues impacting lawyer well-being, why the profession is vulnerable, and suggest ways we can work towards a healthier, more productive legal community.
